Kelly has really come into her own and found herself. To be honest I wasn't that crazy about the song.. then I saw the video! In my opinion that's what a good video does. A video can put such an intoxicating visual in your mind that when ever you hear the song you think of the video, sometime changing your opinion of the song. Good work Kelly. Do it girl!

Lately I have been loving Nicki Minaj. With her there seems to be more there than meets the eye. I'm even loving some of the music. I think it's also interesting that she can really sing... she's focusing on rapping at the moment but if you listen to the whole cd like I said-there's more there. I think she's gorgeous and I'm loving the edgy fashions sense much more than I care for that Lady GooGoo. And! this song has totally gotten to me I find myself humming it all the time now.

David Guetta is the go-to guy as of late on the music scene. He did wonders for Kelly Rowland's career, had a major hit with Akon and list goes on and on. It's only natural for one of the hottest women in popular music to finally pair up with the Producer (DJ) of the moment. As with the recent leaked song 'Only Girl (In The World)' here she is displaying a happier more fun side than in the (in my opinion) fantastic "Rated R' cd. Some people are giving her flack for using auto-tune, but she doesn't need to... it's indicative of the style of music. So it's OK with me. And she looks GORGEOUS! I love the make up. It's a fun video... smells like another hit to me!

Ellen has given notice she's not coming back next season to Idol, Simon Cowell has left to pursue bringing his other hit show from Great Britian to The United States. I tend to think Simon saw a sinking ship and decided to get out while it was still on top. Kara (in my opinion) never really caught on and she isn't coming back next season either! Has American Idol run it's course? I think it may have. The way they handled Paula Abdul was the beginning of the end. Time will tell....

One of the best songs on the 'Bionic' album. Gorgeous video. People have slept on the 'Bionic' album ... perhaps this new single & video will give it some much needed attention. There's so much more to it than the first single. She continues to be one of the most exciting artist's to watch grow to me. Her talent is off the charts. This new cd is such a diverse project, it really is much more than a dance album. I really hope 'Desnudate' is one of the next singles!

I LOVE Kelly's music these days. She has found her own identity and she's making some good dance music. I've always found dance music by artist's who can really sing to be that much more entertaining. It's difficult to break out from such a popular group when you weren't the lead singer, there's always going to be comparisons. She suffered from that for a while, but in David Guetta she found someone that ignited something in her. I've always liked her, so it's good to see her break out and turn it out! Werk Kelly!

There is a witness who claims Chris Brown's tearful near breakdown during the Michael Jackson tribute he did on the BET Awards was only a bid for sympathy and fake. Further claiming one of his 'people' gave him eye drops to bring on the tears! This guys career is in ruins but I really hope he didn't do this. I saw the performance & admittedly I thought it was a bit much. But I thought it was 'possibly' real. I think what he was crying about was his life.... even dressed like Michael I think Mike was the furthest thing from his mind. He majorly fucked up and ruined and young and very promising career. I hope this isn't true... but nothing surprises me anymore.

It's long been obvious contrary to his tough comments and acerbic demeanor the alumni have a true infinity for Simon. I haven't watched the show much in recent years, this year nearly at all. Now I feel there's no reason to watch. Simon will be sorely missed no matter how much they try and claim the show is about the people. But you never know... maybe they have a trick up their sleeve. There could announce a replacement that will reinvigorate everything. We will see...

Macy Gray is one of those artists I should pay more attention to. Just when I seem to forget about her she comes along with something else I like... a lot! She consistently makes music that I respond to. Coupled with that very unique raspy voice she seems to have a wealth of musicality. She has a knack for constructing some very full bodied rhythmic songs. She also does topical issues in songs without it sounding preachy or corny as so many others do. She takes this song I saw her perform on Leno 'Beauty In The World' which could have been annoyingly saccharine with it's message of spreading love and recognizing beauty and makes it relate-able. All the while keeping her quirky. There's definitely a place on the scene for Macy. Nice to see someone doing their own thing... not following the pack.

Christina has always been an artist that's liked to shock audience's. She has gotten lots of grief over it. Here in the phony puritanical America they made such a case with her single 'Dirrty" it stunted it's success. Sometime scandal can invigorate your work & sometime it does just the opposite... just ask Janet Jackson. By the by "Dirrty" went on to be a major song for her abroad while settling for top 40 here. While top 40 beats not charting, it could have & should have done much better. Her new song 'Not Myself Tonight' while getting good reviews in certain music publications has gotten mixed reactions from fans. Some say it doesn't sound 'current' it sounds like '90's disco'. Well surprise,surprise people that's what it's supposed to sound like. Listen to the top ten. It's riddled with a nod to this or that.. think about it... what does 'now' sound like? We don't know because there is no now, everyone is immersed with paying homage to well... you fill in the blank. The word original is basically obsolete. I've gotten used to it. The trick is to see who is talented enough to put their own unique spin on it.

Since the release of Christina's video for 'Not Myself Tonight' there is talk all over the internet that she's copying Lady Gaga. I find this hilarious. And frankly rather impossible. How can you accuse someone of copying a copycat? Hmmm....

All these people that think Gaga is innovative or original or (God help me) breaking some new ground.... wow! If that's your thought process not only are you simply wrong, your 'drinking the Kool Aid' as a good friend of mine says. She is the personification of copycat. It's like watching Grace Jones, Madonna, Kylie, etc,etc,etc....

Gaga wears weird clothing for shock value. In her new video Christina's wardrobe is very fetish, very sexual in keeping with the song topic. She's done shocking before... before Gaga people. If you remember the early 90's & Madonna THERE is where you see a lot of the inspiration for this video. I like it for what it is. I can assure you her next video will be completely different. Her videos are always very conceptual & very different. She is one talented Bitch!

It shouldn't surprise me but it still does... the negativity that persists in people even in the most dire of times. Reading different blogs and their comments all over the net of how people are angry that the Red Cross and other organizations are lending a hand here in America to Haiti. Their claims that we have hungry and indigent people living right here in our own country & that their focus should be here in America. Further going on to ask people to boycott such organizations. Like I said it shouldn't surprise me, but it does... truth be told it disgusts me. The fact that one human can be aware of such utter tragedy and devastation yet harbor such insensitivity is profoundly troubling to me. Not even to mention the charges that the Red Cross doesn't do due diligence here at home is incorrect, just to have such feelings is a concept I cannot begin to fathom. Whenever such tragedies occur I always wish I had more to give and help out. I my self sent my $10 text and purchased associated music on iTunes to the cause. Imagine the difference it can make if everyone that can afford it made such seemingly small contributions...
It's also good to see the 'Stars' come out and support. The concert/telethon spearheaded by George Clooney televised on nearly every major broadcast network was at times difficult to watch but essential. Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen & Mary J. Blige were some of the best... most inspiring moments for me.

2009 The year The King of Pop made his final curtain call. Or did he? The exceptionally talented Michael Jackson lost his life and we found out our interest in him had not even slightly began to cease. His catalog flew up the charts, selling more than a lot of the new releases that were currently being released. The movie showcasing his rehearsals for his comeback tour This Is It and it's accompanying soundtrack did the kind of business to solidify the fact that he is indeed the King of Pop.
Michael sold millions, but he wasn't the only one. We saw new artist's make their mark as well. Lady GaGa took fun dance music & outlandish costumes (a very 80's concept) with some solid writing and carved out quite the career for herself. Drake a novice rapper... burst on the scene igniting some much needed life into the rap scene. He doesn't even have an album out at the moment yet he's nominated for Grammy's. Speaking of rap.. despite all the hoopla over Eminem's return (and his big numbers out the gate) Jay-Z made the rap song of the year. Jay featuring Alicia Keys has made the kind of rap song that has those usually not interested in rap dancing & singing along. New artist Angel Taylor has made one of the best Pop debut albums in a long, long time. I am totally addicted! Taylor Swift. We can't talk about 2009 and not mention Miss Swift... thanks to Kanye West. She's won several awards (in spite of Kanye), crossed over way beyond the Country charts & sold millions & millions of albums. She is the good-girl answer to Miley Cyrus. Kings Of Leon made an album of very sexy, straight forward rock & roll laced with some down & dirty soul...thus giving us and them the album of their career. And then we have Chris Brown and Rihanna. After all the drama, the apologies, the interviews they release some music. Back to business. Rihanna is the first out the gate. I've always appreciated her since the second CD. She's another one who made good solid dance music. After listening to the latest Rated R.. it nearly makes me forget the former projects. Rated R is such quality, so good it takes Miss Fenty to another level. It has that rare commodity... an album I can put on and not have to program. I can listen to it all the way though. It is easily her best work yet. They say true art comes from diversity.. this is proof positive. Chris Brown has released a couple singles and his full CD is coming out as I write this. I would love to close this out with my singular favorite CD of the year. But it's impossible. I have a tie. Eminem's Relapse & Rihanna's Rated R. Relapse because Eminem continues to put out such quality. That's what it's all about to me. So many were sure after his long hiatus he would not retain his hold on what's current in music and due to his personal problems his work would suffer. Not only has he proved this wrong he did it with a vengeance. And Rihanna as I said made a work of art. Proving she's more than just the flavor of the month.

People are really up in arms over David Letterman's admission of guilt yet no standard apology.
First I'll say I am a big fan of David's. So you know where this is going. OK.
There's a part of me that believes sometime soon after I've posted this he will make an apology.
Because of all the flack he's getting over not already doing so. Frankly it doesn't bother me. He wasn't married during these trysts with these women. Until otherwise stated they didn't occur as a means to further anyone's career in his company. These were relationships that came of people being in close proximity to one another and as the old saying goes "one thing lead to another".
People are always ready to throw around that term 'sexual harassment' but it isn't always the case. Would I do it? Probably not... but this happens all the time in the work place. All The Time! Wake up America! Stop pretending you don't know! Most of these people passing judgment have done far worse themselves. If two consenting adults choose to enter into these kind of entanglements it's on them! I say kudos to David for going straight to the authorities, then addressing it on his program. Should he apologize? No! Because he had sex with women that were full participants?
Because some broke Producer was trying to blackmail him to pay off his many financial woes?
Give me a fucking break! I love you David... and YES I'll be watching!

Its nearly a year later and I still have Cyndi Lauper's 'Into The Nightlife' in my heavy rotation. I remember when I first read that Cyn was going to do a dance album. I was wasn't sure if that was such a smart idea. So many of these artists of a certain age who venture to take on this genre of music fail considerably to me. Madonna has sold doing so, but the music itself is very questionable. I don't like honestly. The incredible Cher was even very successful for a while with it.
Well, I'm happy to say Cyndi proved me wrong. 54 at the time, she made a good solid album that transcended what her counterparts had produced. Songs that made you want to dance yet still were songs of substance. Of course she didn't sell as well as the other fluff, but that's just the way it goes. This was one of her best albums notwithstanding the genre. Quality always wins out in my book.
One of the shinning moment's is the second single 'Into The Nightlife'.

Michael Jackson is and will always be the embodiment of what a true entertainer is all about. He brought together people with music in ways no one has ever done before. He blurred the lines of color (where it should have never been) with his music, he is known as the King Of Pop but his music defied being pigeon holed in one genre and what people often forget is he was a passionate humanitarian.
His music is truly the soundtrack to my life and so many others. Hearing a song of his takes me right back to the enjoyment of when I first heard it.
Never having been a fan of Elvis I can now understand the severity of sorrow his fans have felt ever since his death. Micheal's legend is comparable to if not more significant than Elvis. For a young black boy from Gary, Indiana to go on to achieve all that he has is a true testament dreams becoming a reality.
He is alive in so many of today's artists. His influence can be seen far and wide in the entertainment business. But more importantly we have his ground breaking videos and incredible catalog of music to remind us of his genius forever.

The Michael Sandy Foundation is having a Rooftop Party on August 8th

I will be one of the featured performers for this festive and very important event.

Michael Sandy was a 29yo gay male who died as a result of a robbery/hate crime on October 9th 2006. The foundation is raising money to provide a permanent memorial at Plumb Beach which is where the incident took place. All proceeds from this fundraiser will create awareness of this tragic event and provide a lasting memory of Micheal to all those who visit the park.

On August 8th 2009 from 6pm to 4am in Williamsburg Brooklyn @ 128 Meserole St.

To say I am shocked would be drastically understating it. But.... rumor has it (according to Michael Musto) that Diana Ross & Barbra Streisand will be making a duet! I knew Miss Ross was working on her next album, but I didn't know this. Thankfully for those who love her Ross' next cd will not be another drawn out walk down memory lane. Shockingly enough 'I Love You' was certified gold. But enough is enough (wink)
This duet business is a bit incredible to me. I would love it if it were true. Even if it is though... Diana Krall is rumored to be producing the duet. Hmmmmmm? I know she just took home top Grammy's for her recent work with another legend... but Diana & Barbra? WTF. There is possibly some truth to this all, she is producing for Barbra at the moment. So let's wait and see. Now I'm not one those who think these two Divas are going to have personality clashes... at this point in their lives/careers I think they would be respective of each other. Even if not of others. But, this is too good to be true.

After a four year absence, at the end of the summer on September 17th they will air 'Diva's Live 2009'. This new incarnation will be held at The Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera house in New York City. Promising a bigger and even better show Vh1 plans to include "more" of the newer diva's... and they want the audience to help pick them. If Miley Cyrus pops up on there I think I will die! Jamie Foxx has been getting all this flack about letting the oh-so-popular Miley Cyrus have it on his radio show. Some are comparing it Don Imus and saying Jamie should be ashamed of himself , etc..etc... I totally disagree. Jamie didn't initiate the conversation. He was responding to the what was being discussed by the other people in the show. He made a few lame jokes about her questionable girl next door image, as most every other comedian does. I didn't hear anything decidedly racist, perhaps offensive to some... but if you don't like it change the channel. He did this on a satellite radio show, not an easily accessible AM station as you know who. While Mr. Foxx's humor isn't really my cup of tea, it's a hell of a lot easier to take jokes when done by an actual comedian and not by someone long thought of to be a bigot. Who knows.. maybe I'm insensitive because I think little miss thing is annoying anyway? LOL
What ever. He actually apologized later in the evening on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. That's Hollywood for you.

He has made one of the few reality shows I can stomach even more enjoyable... absolute appointment television. If he doesn't win... I don't think I'll ever watch again! LOL

One of the executive producers of that dreadful ABC show 'The Bachelor' is bringing a new reality show to TV. Due to premiere in April on TV Land PRIME is 'The Cougar' starring someone I love to love in spite of her sometime.. Miss Vivica A. Fox. You can say what you want about girlfriend but she is always working. I hope this one is better than that VH1 foolishness about looking for a stylist. 'The Cougar' will have an eight episode run starting in April, and will have 20 young guys vying for the attention of some hungry, blood thirsty cougars. I wonder if a certain eccentric colorful cougar I know in Manhattan will appear? Time will tell... brace yourselves is she does. It'll be stranger than fiction.
What ever the case Miss Vivica...I'll take a look at the first episode. Make it worth while for me to tune into the full fantasy.

Crazy Racism In West Village

Perhaps a lot of people read about the 'racist bakery' in the West Village of New York City in the news papers. But actually seeing the footage from Fox News takes this unbelievable story to another level. After watching the creator of the cookie called 'Drunken Negro Face' try to explain why he named it this & how he doesn't think it's racist I am left with only one feeling.... disgust. As you will see in the video he says it's a tribute to our new President. Now, I am not one of those people afraid of racial humor, but let it be funny. I should add... it seems clear the intention here wasn't humor. But what is perplexing is that this asshole actually thought that it was ok to do this. All this talk of the Superbowl is anathema to me. I have no conception of what football is to people. Well... there is the gorgeous Reggie Bush but beyond that? Gibberish. Best part has always been the performances to me. Can't wait to see Jennifer Hudson make her return and sing that anthem like no one has since when Whitney was in her prime. But Bruce Springsteen? Hmmm... he's ok, but I prefer the 80's Springsteen. Give me 'Dancing In The Dark' & 'Glory Days', So Sunday I will be probably recovering from what ever mayhem I participated in Saturday night and once again wondering what the hell all this football is about.
Diana Ross' 1996 Superbowl performance for all it wasn't I discovered is better at a second glance. I didn't remember liking her changes as much... she looked good! I watched the inauguration of President Obama this afternoon.
It was one of the most inspiring things I believe I've seen.... ever. President Obama in his usual eloquent and inspirational manner in my opinion spoke to everyone. For real this time. So many before him said the appropriate words as if speaking to everyone, yet never quite achieving that feat. What I found most telling of the kind of leader he is, and will be is his ability to make everyone listening feel as one. He only said the word 'I' three times. Instead we heard the word 'We' used over and over. And that feeling resonated throughout the crown there in attendance. Complete strangers were holding hands, kids and senoirs were crying tears of joy in unison. I dare to find the person who did not feel a sense of hope.
Somewhere Martin Luther King Jr. is smiling down thinking all that he fought for was not in vain. That this birthday is the most joyous one he could have ever imagined. Dreams do come true.

Let me first say I am either a fan of Britney or a hater. I was never into her music till the Blackout album. It was different from what I had ever heard from her, it had an edge. I can even say it was one of my favorite albums of that year. The only song of hers before that even got any of my attention was Toxic. I never thought she had great singles till that song... I think a lot of people agreed with me. Womanizer was only her second number one single. Oddly enough for someone that has sold as many albums as she, her singles never do as well. Well... it's nice to see her 'back' and seemingly in a better place now in her life.
I watched her 'comeback' performance on Good Morning America. And something was just a little off. She looked amazing, she seemed to be doing what she was supposed to do. But, she was not the Britney I used to see when ever she performed somewhere prior to her... shall we say difficult period. She was not dancing with her dancers throughout the numbers, she kind of went in and out of the routines. Reminded me of the 80s when Whitney did every 5th step. Say what you want about Ms Spears but she used to attack the dance floor like a Janet Jackson wannabe. Even when she later spoke with Diana Sawyer & crew there some kind of disconnect. It was as if she was there, yet she wasn't really there. This young woman has been through a hell of a lot in the last couple of years... maybe this is the new Britney that has made it through all that? Or perhaps this is just her getting her feet wet and she'll return to the Britney everyone remembers? I'm sure her die hard fans are just happy to have their girl back.
It's my fascination with Icons (which borders on fetish) that keeps this pop culture junkie's interest piqued. I wish Brit all the best. The Brits have to stick together lol!

I was so nervous during my first listen of Grace Jones' new cd. I live, love and adore Miss Jones. But, lately the girls of her era have been not stepping up to the plate when it comes to new projects. So my expectations were askew. I didn't know what to expect. Well... much to my delight La Grace's new cd is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
She far exceeded even my loftiest wishes. Girlfriend was not fucking around, she set out to make a true piece of art. You don't hear her trying to be something she not to get a hit song, just making good old solid music that will absolutely stand the test of time.
After hearing the first song released "Corporate Cannibal" I was afraid the whole album would sound like that...WRONG! While I did indeed like the song I didn't want a complete cd sounding like it. So many people these days are guilty of that.
Instead you get one of the most introspective varied albums shes ever done. She even does a ballad..something she hasn't really done since "I've Done It Again" from "Nightclubbing" Said song named "I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)" is one of the best on the album. As is "Williams' Blood"...what an amazing song this is. I can't stop listening to it. And then there's the fabulous "This Is' which starts with the lyric "This is my voice, my weapon of choice.."
Grace has proved that the girls of a certain age can still get in that studio and turn it the fuck out!
As a performer this woman gives me such inspiration. She has proven that talent is not something that fades. It cultivates with life experiences and gets richer and richer. This is by far the best album I have heard this year.

Barack Obama is the new President! It is difficult to express in words ones feelings being of color in America and having the privilege to experience this ground breaking event. It is something all Americans will surely never forget and tell their kids & grand kids about. But it is particularly a moment of reflection and redemption for people of color who perhaps never thought whey would witness this in their lifetime. This is one of those moments where you will always remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when it became official that Barack Obama had officially become our President. People were rejoicing in the streets here and abroad. A feeling of disbelief and utter euphoria rushed over me simultaneously. Right away I thought of Martin Luther King looking down somewhere and feeling as a sense of supreme accomplishment. I felt like finally his death TRULY was not in vain.
I can truthfully say America The Beautiful now and feel as though I mean it.

Patti Labelle reunites with Sarah Dash & Nona Hendrix. After 30 years. I was so eagerly awaiting this project. After going to see them at their signing at Splash in NYC and listening to the cd several times over I am left less than inspired. Patti is in good voice as usual and it was exciting to hear the girls harmonizing again. But! The cd is very lack luster. I think the problem lies in some of the choices in producers. Working with Wyclef Jean didn't produce anything exciting or memorable. The song "Roll Out" for instance sounds contrived and unworthy of the talents of these ladies. It seems working with him was an effort to be relevant or hip, neither was accomplished. Lenny Kravitz and his sensibilities seems to work much better with who they are. The selections with Kravitz are some of the best on the album.
It's a fairly decent cd that should have been a stellar comeback. As a fan of these ladies I'm glad to have it...but all this does is make me hope for another album where they really get it right.

Jennifer Has Arrived!

Jennifer Hudson has finally released her long awaited debut album. And it is quite delicious if I may say so myself. I was so scared of what they may do with her. Some of her fellow Idols have had less than stellar debut albums in my opinion. Katharine McPhee comes to mind. I was so afraid they were going to give her all this "..And I'm Telling You.." ish sounding stuff, which would have been a huge mistake. But Clive Davis realized what I did (and many others) that this is a young woman with such an amazing instrument that given the right guidance she could do anything. While the album has a decidedly R&B sound it doesn't suffer from sounding all the same, and certain songs do have that elusive crossover appeal. Listening to the album it's amazing to realize that being in her mid twenties this is only the tip of the iceberg. As her voice grows, matures and gains more control she will truly be someone to be reckoned with for years to come. It will be lovely seeing this young lady grow. There's only one major mistake on the entire project and that is a track called "Pocketbook". Frankly it sounds foolish amidst all the other meticulously crafted songs. Then there's the duet with Fantasia. Good idea, nice attempt... it's nice but it's not half of what one would expect from these two very talented ladies . Doesn't quite do it.
The rest are a mix of good R&B, Pop friendly songs that gives you a sample of what she's capable of. Stand out tracks to me are Invisible, My Heart, We Gon' Fight, If This Isn't Love and To Love Somebody.
Now it's time for Jennifer to shine in the Spotlight!

Jody Watley's latest release not only impressed me.. it turned me out. #1: I didn't know Miss thing had anything new out # 2: It's a whole lot better than that tired thing she last released...she murdered one of my all time favorite Chic songs "I Want You Love". The girls need to learn to leave a classic alone if you don't have anything interesting to bring to it. I would love to see more of the girls from the 80's make some noise today. I just watched R. Kelly give his first interview since being found innocent in his notorious sex-tape trail. BET (Black Entertainment Tom-foolery) is where this mockery of journalism took place. He was interviewed by BET staple Torre whom I love, that being the only thing tolerable about the entire interview. Kelly sat there if not dodging his questions, either out right lying ,making stupid lame excuses or just coming across as a complete illiterate asshole. It astounds me the poor command of the english language so many people have. And... he's a song writer? And that long in the tooth? Who helps writing these songs? Anyway.... Torre asked him out right if he liked young girls and he danced around that like Michael Jackson doing Billy Jean. Finally saying some bullshit like " how young? 19?"
He sat there with his overly jet black dyed hair, his face beat more than Joan Collins and talking more than shit than Bill O'Reilly. I don't know who he thought that was supposed to fool. The look in Torre's eyes while talking to him was one of annoyance & disgust. I myself found it assuming in a pathetic kind of way. I guess you can get away with anything if you have enough money. An increasing amount of people who know me have been asking why haven't I written anything about Diana Ross since I've had this blog. If you really know me you know why they're asking. Well... the honest answer is she hasn't done anything noteworthy lately for me to talk about. It's no shade. I still lover her. I will always love her. Although I'm older & wiser and see a multitude of things about her I would not & could not see years ago.... she will always be Mother. Trust me without Diana there would be no Beyonce and a whole bunch of other bitches of whom I won't even mention. She has opened up doors that people truthfully have not given her proper credit for opening. The slight she receives in this manner is perhaps due in part the maniacal-super-uber-diva-bitch persona she personified in her heyday. But look how many have followed and surpassed her by leaps & bounds. Madonna is such a bitch it's almost useless calling her one, J-LO is a notorious cunt, just to name a very few. Could it be because Diana is a black woman? I know in this twisted P.C. world people hate to hear you bring race into it, but..... it is what is is. If you think race isn't an issue in this country your a full on asshole. I mean how dare she demand & expect the same standards her fairer skinned counter parts did in her day...you could almost see it as one one of those pop-ups from Vh1 when ever her name was brought up. Or the fact that she didn't (doesn't) have one of the strongest voices like the other black girls at the time ie: Aretha,Gladys,Dionne. So white women can have beautiful lush pleasant voices, but this black woman from Motown not her, no...hmmmmm.
Not many people in music (woman or man) had the kind of presence this woman had. After growing into her voice, she lost the nasal rawness of her early days & she had this pretty, smooth, relatable yet very distinctive sound that proved perfect for ballads. Those classic songs can be heard all over at all times of day somewhere in the world. In the mid eighties she lost touch with what the masses wanted from her, but she had a long,long run. Longer than most. She is a legend. When you have done the kinds of things she has done and made the undeniable kind of impact in what ever your choice of fields is, no one can take that away from you. She will always be Diana Ross. She will always be Supreme. And we that know will always appreciate her.

Britney Spears cleaned up @ the 25th Anniversary of the MTV VMA's. She was thin,lucid and her normal gorgeous self.. She's Baaaaaack! lol. After having more than 15 nominations she took all major moon men a year after her horrific "Comeback" & when she doesn't even have a current single out. You go girl. And when she first came out before she even spoke she got a standing ovation! Wonder what Kanye is saying now lol. In an uncharacteristically tame telecast with probably the worst host in recent memory (Russell Brand) Brit-Brit stole the show... and didn't even perform. Pink, Christina Aguilera & Rihanna turned in nice performances. They cut Katy Perry who I was waiting to see! grrrrr

I had been wanting to see a good concert for quite some time. A lot of the artists of today do great videos, but . . . . I was longing to see a good live show. A friend suggested we see Patti Labelle . It was free in the Wingate Field Park in Brooklyn. I was never a huge Patti fan... a big Labelle fan but not the former. Well from the moment miss thing hit that stage opening with Queen's " We Will Rock You" (yes, I gagged too!) she had me!!!! I saw her once before live @ MSG and although she was good, I was not floored. This time? This bitch turned me out so much I sat there in awe savoring every minute of her. She PERFORMED! The voice, the banter, the presence, the love she showed to this drunk fool who she by the way made a part of the show... she made you just want to run up there and give her a hug. It was if I was seeing her for the first time. I saw her with new eyes. The reality is that I most likely am responding to the more relaxed, more mature, serene incarnation of this undeniably very talented woman. Well, you got me Patti. Now... I'm just waiting for this Labelle reunion project to surface... coming this fall. I can't wait!

Beyonce's little sister Solange Knowles has done it. Impressed me! She had a album quite few season's back that didn't do it for me. From the sales of it didn't do it for a lot of people. A little time & maturity has done wonders for the younger Knowles offspring. I wondered when the other project came to light how the writer & co-producer of so many Destiny's Child music could have turned out something so bland, so unoriginal for herself. After listening to this I believe there were 2 reasons. 1) Label & managements then "direction" for her... the teen market and 2) Her believing despite those constraints she could turn out something relevant & please everyone. Well Amen to lessons learned. This time around girlfriend is giving us something fresh & new. Good lyric, good music, good production and pleasantly well sang. The first single "I Decided" is gorgeous! The whole set is due out this week... it's called "Sol-Angel" She has found a way to stand out on her own, out of her sisters shadow. And who ever doesn't see that is just plain dumb and/or a Beyonce drone. I have the entire cd and it's excellent!
She has found herself and made good quality music that stands on it's own. You go girl. I LOVE IT!

I was watching my girl Whoopi the other day talk about how the term "African-American" annoys her. I swear that woman and I are so in sync sometime it's frightening. I'm so happy for all my so-called brothers & sisters who prescribe to this latest name sake attached to them. It's all about what makes you happy, and ignorance is bliss right? Sorry but that's some bullshit to me. Like Miss Whoopi.. you refer to me as that and we have a problem. That's nothing but a term white people gave you to make you less of an American. We've gone through a litany of such terms... colored,negro,etc. I got news for people a so-called true American is an Indian, and they get treated like second class citizens far and wide in this lovely America. That's a whole other topic. The term of an American has long been broadened. If you and your parents were born here and speak the native tongue... you are an American. Unless your ass is from a tribe you have no right getting technical and challenging someone's American heritage.

It has apparently gotten too easy to get a record deal. The man on the corner with a cup & a broken smile might as well write down his inner ramblings while gesturing to you as you go on your merry way. Perhaps people will find him entertaining. And, here I thought having to listen to endless drivel from the likes of Gwen Stefani or Madonna or some other gross manifestation of today's culture was bad enough... here comes this! I get a lot of things sent to me, but this one stopped me in my tracks. To call this ghetto would be a compliment.

Someone sent me an email containing this very titillating information. I am not sure if it is 100% true, because Mother is famously ambivalent about doing another full album (yes I called it an album! LOL) But, the rumor is Miss Grace Jones is about to release her first full "cd" since "Bulletproof Heart" I can only hope this is true. My fingers are crossed, everyone say a prayer... Lord knows we all are ready!

here's the info I received:
Grace Jones - pop icon of the '70s and '80s - has signed with Wall of Sound to release Hurricane, her first album since 1989's Bulletproof Heart.

Hurricane will be released on October 27. News of the singer's new deal comes days after she performed at the Massive Attack-curated Meltdown Festival on London's Southbank; an in-attendance Samuel Strang commented (when asked a second ago for an opinion), "she was fucking fantastic".

Mark Jones, MD of Wall of Sound, said: "It's an absolute honour and privilege to be working with Grace. No one has inspired more people whatever race, sex, colour or creed to be who they want to be and so much more. Her new album will not only re-establish her as one of the world's most important artists but also introduce her to a new generation of music lovers."
Jones reportedly simply offered a "Grrrrr" when asked to comment on the new deal. She'll play the Secret Garden Party in Huntingdon on July 26.

Patti Labelle,Nona Hendryx & Sarah Dash has made it official. We will have a new cd from them on September 23rd! Here's to hoping that this is done well & lives up to what we would expect of them. Patti Labelle is the breakout star, but it is "Labelle" that I am truly a fan of. I have to admit I to this day listen to the "Nightbirds" cd as much as anything else. Just had the entire cd on repeat in the player just last week. Divine! They have producers who if they get their shit together properly should produce something us fans can relish for years to come. Let's keep our fingers crossed....

Labelle Sets Date For Reunion Album

R&B trio Labelle is hitting the studio for a reunion album to be produced by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff and Lenny Kravitz. The as-yet-untitled set, the group first since 1976's "Chameleon," is due Sept. 23 via Verve.

In addition, the group, which comprises Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, will perform July 5 in New Orleans as part of the Essence Festival at the Louisiana Superdome.

Although Labelle has performed live on numerous occasions since officially splitting up more than three decades ago, the group's spokesperson says the Essence set is its first public concert since January 1977.

Labelle is best known for the single "Lady Marmalade," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart in 1975. The track was famously covered in 2001 by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink on the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack.

Patti LaBelle has a number of her own dates lined up this summer; next up is a show tomorrow (July 1) in Albuquerque, N.M.

It's free (for now) and it has a database of music that I find endlessly entertaining. It's a UK-based internet radio and music community website. It offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the users favorites. I sit at the computer rediscovering music I hadn't heard in ages. Yes IKEA has opened their first store in the greater New York City area. No more does city folk have to trek out to New Jersey, or Long Island to visit the store that most New Yorkers seem to adore. There is now a store in Redhook, Brooklyn. My friends and I went to the Grand Opening. Spent lots of money and stood on many a line (sigh). It was quite an affair, all kinds of Brooklyn politicians were at hand for the opening, they were giving out free gifts... you get the idea. Welcome to the city IKEA!

Whoopi Goldberg hosted The Tony's this past weekend in NYC. She was in rare form. She was the Whoopi I always loved, the Whoopi that in my opinion doesn't get the chance to really shine on The View. The Whoopster is the only reason watching The View has become must-see tv for me these days. I must admit she does quite a good job on there dealing with the madness that is Elizabeth Hasselbeck. And although I really like her the oddness that is Sherry Shepherd . And, not only was Whoopi funny & whimsical & the wonderful Whoopi we all fell in love with, she looked FABULOUS! That fierce kid from Project Runway Christian Siriano whipped her in to fashionable shape and had her looking the most stylish she ever has! She even had on gorgeous shoes! You go Whoopi... I love you!

Friendship

I got a call this afternoon from a friend in distress over a "friend" of his. He was telling me that they are in the middle of a fight. He is feeling bad about hurtful things they said to one another. And, his "friend" has supposedly written him off as he calls it. He's driving himself crazy trying to figure out what to do, how to make peace. Finding the right words to say to this person to make him realize they should stop wasting precious time and get past it all.
He went on to tell me how this "friend" has been bad mouthing him to mutual friends, and bringing up things thought to be resolved from the past.
He wanted my advice as how to handle it.
Well I wrote a blog a while back somewhere else and I thought it was a good time to resurrect it.
Reading it once again reminded me of a few things myself . I'll share it here....

Friends?

What an interesting word "friend" is.
We use the word too lightly. We very often use the word incorrectly.
Someone does not become a friend because you hang out with them a few times. Or even several times. Thats a buddy. Life will teach you this harsh lesson. Quickly! I could go on.... but what I'd rather do is speak of what makes a true friend.
A friend is a person who u feel a connection to. You can sometimes finish each others sentences. You and this person share your entire lives. Just about every aspect. You don't cultivate a friend through monetary entanglements. A friend is there in the good times and the bad. A friend is someone you can depend on emotionally. When a true friend enters your life it enriches it and makes it flourish. A friend in its truest form is a gift to be treasured and held close to your heart.
Why the need to explore this subject matter at this time you may ask?
Simple.
I have recently opened my heart up to a few wonderful people who have fired a spark in me. I am inspired by the sincerity and calm these select people have brought into my world.
I remember watching an episode of Oprah (LOL) where her guest was promoting a book about learning when&how to let go. Learning how to determine when to say when. Knowing when there is a time for some personal inventory in ones life. Learning how to close the door to certain chapters in your life that are damaging and/or disruptive to your progress. After all, we are all a work in progress. Although doing so may not be popular to the people that fall into that category. Its essential to move forward thus giving us the opportunity to grow.
Well I have done such inventory, and it is the most freeing and liberating thing I have ever done in my life. This may seem to be a very self serving activity. And it is. Thats part of the lesson learned. Sometimes it's ok to be self serving and think about number one.
It's like an addict never having to use what ever his choice of poisin is to assuage what ever ails him again.
I am free.
I am Me.

Obama Wins!

Barak Obama has made history. He is the first black man to make it this far in the race for president in the United States. There is a lot of speculation to whether he can actually win it in the long run. There has been so much hype over the extremely close race he and Hilary Clinton have run, that I think people are not properly taking into consideration what a milestone this is. This has been the most exciting,diversified political race of my lifetime. And, it's not even over!
Just as much of a historic moment as Mr. Obama's win is, so is the fact that his fierce competitor was a woman. This is the most exciting political season ever. Period.
However, I don't think it's fair that Hilary is receiving so much negative press about not conceding Tuesday evening. It's been reported she will concede the following Saturday. Excuse me... but, whats the difference? She has run a strong & trailblazing race. I don't see the problem with waiting a few days to do it properly. She has received 18 million votes! She owes it to all those people who wanted her to be the nominee. Heck, she owes it to the party. This has to be done delicately and precisely. The ultimate goal is to get ALL of those 18 million voters to now stand behind Obama. Or as much of them as possible. If this is done correctly John McCain doesn't stand a chance.
This had proved to be the political race of a lifetime, with lots more to come.
Will there be a Omama-Clinton ticket Hmmmm...let's all stay tuned....

I know everyone loves to let Miss Winehouse have it. I know the bitch has got issues but I love her with an endless love. Girlfriend can chirp like nobody's business. The music industry likes to have a favorite to pick on. Amy's the toast of the season. Well, more than just this season it seems. The Spears made a few appearances on an insipid comedy and got daddy to watch over her so the wolves are backing off of her... somewhat. Poor Amy can't get a break. I know the girl is a mess. Most all these damn singers are a mess...who are they fooling? Not me!
AM is just a big o shameless mess. Natalie Cole passing judgement saying she didn't deserve to be awarded for drug use. That bitch got nerve, big o drug addict that she is...and yes she still is one! Amy wasn't awarded for drug use. She won because she is madly talented and she wrote and had a hand in most all of her material. She didn't sing her dead father's old songs! Keep your head up Amy I love you girl.
And yes I posted a pic of her looking cute... even I balk at those fierce pics they keep throwing around of her. FYI: anyone can take a bad pic, they catch her at her worse.
